Accommodations

In Helsinki

Students attending the GLOBE Learning Expedition slept in classrooms at the Aleksis Kivi school in Helsinki with night supervision provided by Finnish teachers and other adults. The Aleksis Kivi school is a short distance from the Paasitorni Conference Center, about 10 minutes walk. Students needed to bring a sleeping bag, towel and toiletries. Showers were available at the school, and there were sinks in each of the classrooms where the students slept. The school provided pads for under the sleeping bags. The school opened Sunday night for the students. The first meal was provided on Monday night, so those arriving on Sunday needed to make their own arrangements for meals until that time.

Teachers had the option to stay at the school also for no charge or to stay at a local hotel. Hotels costs were not included in the conference registration fee. Our Finnish hosts made arrangements to have rooms set aside for the conference.

At Nuuksio

On Wednesday, July 1st, participants were transported by bus to a forest near Helsinki for two days of outdoor activities and one night of camping. There were 36 army tents provided, each one with room for 15 people. Students and teachers staying in the tents brought sleeping bags and pads to place under their bags for extra comfort.
